Is my BMW compatible with Apple CarPlay?
⚠️ Apple CarPlay was first introduced on selected BMW models from late 2016 onwards.
Every vehicle specification is different so you can't only rely on the model year to confirm compatibility.
Every compatible CarPlay head unit requires either a factory WiFi antenna or at least the WLAN port so one can be installed.
Having a compatible head unit doesn't automatically mean Apple CarPlay can be activated, a firmware update may be necessary.

Some BMW systems share the same UI but are different!
Using your iDrive Controller:
- NBT - A good way to tell if you have NBT is if you have NEXT navigation installed.
- EntryNav – A good way to tell if you have EntryNav is if you have ROUTE navigation installed.
- NBT Evo ID4 – A good way to tell if you have NBT Evo ID4 is if you have EVO navigation installed.
Verify If You Have A WiFi Antenna Installed
You have the antenna pre-installed if you have one of the following factory options
- 6CP CarPlay Preparation
- 6WD WLAN Hotspot
You can also navigate your iDrive and open the My Devices section and add a new device, looking for the listed options screen mirroring or WiFi hotspot.
EntryNav2 Always remove your head unit to check for a present WLAN port.

Understanding BMW iDrive Systems
BMW has used several different iDrive systems over the years, each with different hardware, software and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Identifying your exact head unit is essential before purchasing an activation.
What is BMW NBT?
NBT (Next Big Thing) was introduced on many BMW models between 2012 and 2016 and typically uses NEXT navigation maps. Although the interface looks very similar to NBT EVO ID4, standard NBT systems cannot be upgraded with native Apple CarPlay. If your navigation version says NEXT, your vehicle almost certainly has an NBT head unit.
What is BMW EntryNav?
EntryNav was fitted to many entry-level BMW models and uses ROUTE navigation maps. Its interface is almost identical to NBT, which is why checking the installed navigation version is the easiest way to identify it. EntryNav does not support native Apple CarPlay activation.
What is BMW EntryNav2?
EntryNav2 introduced newer hardware and uses WAY navigation maps. Some EntryNav2 systems can support Apple CarPlay, depending on their specification, firmware version and whether a WiFi antenna or WLAN connector is present. Compatibility should always be checked before ordering.
What is BMW NBT EVO?
NBT EVO uses EVO navigation maps and is the first BMW head unit capable of native Apple CarPlay. Compatibility depends on the iDrive version (ID4, ID5 or ID6), firmware version and available hardware. Some ID4 systems require a firmware upgrade before CarPlay can be activated, while ID5 and ID6 systems are typically compatible.
What is BMW MGU?
MGU replaced NBT EVO and powers BMW iDrive 7 and later systems. It uses LIVE or JOY navigation maps depending on the vehicle generation. Most MGU systems support Apple CarPlay from the factory and offer the latest BMW infotainment features.

Activation Methods Explained

🔌 USB CarPlay Activation
This is the simplest option for supported vehicles. Activation is completed using a USB device, making it ideal for customers who want a straightforward plug-and-play solution.
Only available for NBT EVO systems running firmware versions H,I,J,K,L,M,N&O
💻 ENET CarPlay Activation
ENET activation is used when USB activation is not supported. This method involves coding through an ENET cable and is typically used for vehicles requiring software-based activation.
All systems are supported for this method.
🖥️ Fullscreen CarPlay Upgrade
Some BMW vehicles come with split-screen Apple CarPlay, which doesn't look the best. Certain firmware versions can be upgraded to fullscreen view.
